Kids Birthday Party Ideas & Games

BY SHINDIGZ | APRIL 28, 2015

Just because your little one’s birthday falls on a rainy or snowy day doesn’t mean that it can’t be a totally fun and exciting party! Get creative with indoor birthday party ideas for kids and have an amazing celebration—while staying safe, dry, and warm—this winter.

Games and Activities Keep Them Smiling

The key to a stimulating birthday party when everyone is indoors is to have plenty of games planned. Even in a smaller home or party space, little guests can get moving and shake off the winter blues!

Big Balloon Fun

Balloons are an insanely cheap and versatile way to jazz up a party—and they can be used for more than just decoration. Use paper plates and popsicle sticks to create "paddles", and have kids play tennis with colorful balloons; use the couch as the center net! Balloons also facilitate a giggle-worthy relay race: set up safe obstacles like pillows around a course, and it will be ready, set, fun!

Major Laser Ribbon Games

Ribbons and paper streamers are also easy and inexpensive tools for transforming an indoor space into a birthday spectacle. Have a hallway? Try creating a "laser" maze by taping ribbon back and forth at different heights and distances, then having kids try to make their way through without touching the "laser."

Mini Olympics

If you have some time for lots of activities, why not through a special birthday edition mini Olympics indoors? Plan a bunch of mini games and challenges, and then give out prizes at the end. Kids will feel like winners, and will be busy for hours. Celebrate at the end with a trophy-shaped piñata, and kids will be talking about the party for weeks to come!

Low-Key Crafts Keep Them Busy

If space is an issue when planning a kids’ indoor birthday party, try out some simple craft projects to keep their little hands and minds occupied. Kids will love making their own favors—have them paint a paper mache box and then fill it with individually wrapped candies at the end of the party—and will delight at getting a bit messy with paints. Neon fabric paint sticks make it easy to contain mess, while letting kids get creative—have them each paint and decorate an old T-shirt that they can wear to remember the party after it’s over.

Whether you get crafty, rowdy, or creative, a little planning will let kids have just as much at an indoor birthday party as they would outside this winter!
