Hip Hop Birthday Party by Brittany Schwaigert

Who doesn’t love 80’s and 90’s hip hop music? RUN DMC, Beastie Boys, Sugarhill Gang, Naughty By Nature…just to name a few! I had this idea to celebrate my fellow 80’s kids with this fun Hip Hop Party! I think men are sometimes hard to throw themed parties for, right? I mean, it’s either beer or sports themed parties for men and that gets boring! So, for this party, I wanted to celebrate the old school Hip Hop lover!

I started my party design with this fun Hip Hop Arch. It’s super easy to put together and it comes with a personalized topper to add the birthday boy’s name. I used it a little differently and didn’t put the topper on the arch. Instead, I used the topper as a backdrop for the table. To make an arch, I used these super sized gold mylar balloons! I used all O letters and linked them together like a gold chain. So fun right?

A red brick alley in my cute little town square made the perfect backdrop for this party! To bring in more of the brick pattern, I used this Brick Patterned Corrugated Paper and wrapped it around the table with duct tape. I also used it on the top of the table to create my very own bricked table. Any good Hip Hop Party has to have music right? I used these GIANT Speaker standees on either side of my table to make it feel like a concert. I was even surprised at how big they were when I put them together! They are the perfect WOW factor at any music themed party!

On the front of the table, I used this inflatable boom box cooler. What a great prop that’s also really useful to serve cold drinks! On the front of the table, I made a quick banner that says "Hip Hop Hooray" using my die cut machine. To display all our goodies on the table, I used a few metal pieces from my personal collection and turned them upside down! I also personalized a large parental advisory sticker to add to the top metal box to bring in more of the theme.

For my treats, I had to have these cute microphone cupcakes! They are such an easy DIY. Just use edible color spray (which you can get at any craft store) to spray ice cream cones and then add a cupcake inside that you’ve rolled in silver sprinkles. Your guests will love them! I love a clever food idea and for this party, I came up with "headphones" made of Ho-Hos and licorice! Yum! I also served cherry popcorn or "Hip Hop Corn" in these black and white striped bags and "drumsticks" or pretzel rods in these pedestal candy jars.

For our favors, we had black sunglasses, gold chains, these awesome personalized Parental Advisory chocolate bars (which I personalized by playing on the birthday boy’s birth decade) and of course… boom box favor boxes to take everything home!
