For The Love Of The Game Spirit Ideas

What a year this has been! I wanted to do something special for our son since it is his Senior year of high school and it hasn’t been the most traditional year. We are so proud of him for maintaining straight A’s while dealing with the challenges of online learning, also holding down his first job and keeping up with basketball practice. He has loved basketball since he was a baby and I have loved watching him from the stands his whole childhood. I wanted to do something to show him how proud we are of him and to give him a chance to have some friends stop by so I put together a little basketball themed party celebrating his accomplishments.

When I started to plan this gathering, I thought of it as like a meet and greet or an open house. Friends and family could stop by any time throughout the day for some snacks and treats, take some fun pictures and just hang out for a bit. I wanted to use décor that I could use later once basketball season started to show some school spirit. I started outside in the front yard with the senior sport yard sign and basketball jersey yard sign as they walked up to the door. Then added a small balloon garland on the front gate using our school colors of yellow, black & white balloons.

Once Inside I had one main table set up for food and drinks. My son requested pretzels, so I made a fun pretzel wall using a peg board and covering it with black & yellow vinyl fringe. I utilized the small cardboard cheer signs that I could customize and added a score card at the top like it was a score board. Using some peg hooks to hang the pretzels on and wire baskets to hold some personalized hand fans the pretzel wall came in so handy.

The backdrop for the food table was the basketball photo backdrop. You could leave as is with a black background or add your own wording like I did on mine. Basketball danglers hung from the ceiling and I used the basketball court floor table cover as a table runner. Large cardboard cheer letters with the school’s initials went on the front of the table. We had pizza and cupcakes for treats with basketball plates, referee napkins and Water Break custom labels for the water bottles.

I had so many fun props set up all around for people to grab and take photos with like number 1 spirit mitts, standees on a stick and a big head cutout that I can’t wait to hold up in the stands this season. I even made a custom player vertical banner that was a huge hit.

I couldn’t let everyone leave without taking something home with them so on a bookshelf I displayed a few basketball centerpieces, fun favors from stainless steel tumblers, black insulated bottles, inflatable basketballs, custom candy bars & hair ties.

It was a great day full of school spirit and support for our amazing student athlete. We are so proud!
