Summer is here and we're celebrating the warm weather with backyard BBQs, more time with family and lots of outdoor games. Together with Shindigz, I put together this backyard BBQ just in time for Father’s Day incorporating all the things dads love. The long days are my favorite part of summer! There’s plenty of time to spend in the backyard playing games, eating delicious BBQ and watching the kids play.
For this Father’s Day, we gathered together with a group of friends and hosted a beer flight party. My husband doesn’t drink very much beer, so this was a great way to introduce him to a variety of brews to see which one he liked best. I set up a beer flight station using the beer flight tasting placemats and old school starburst beer mugs. I defined the bar area by using some white wooden marquee letters, galvanized buckets and the mini pub beer flight set.
We had a variety of yard games to play like giant Jenga, bocce and cornhole. I customized the cornhole game by choosing the blue striped pattern and adding my own fun phrase. There are so many options to choose from – you can use your last name, monograms or customize it with a fun saying like "Dad is Rad". I loved the cornhole set because of how it folds up together making it easy to transport. The bean bags are stored inside, and the two boards fold up together. It’s also made of a sturdy plastic which makes it perfect to take to the lake with us this summer and we don’t have to worry about the wood getting ruined.
When it came to the overall décor, I wanted to keep it to blue tones with silver accents and rustic touches. The main table featured a boxwood ball décor centerpiece. I avoided using any real flowers because I wanted to keep the vibe masculine. Navy blue plates paired with silver napkins wrapped in twine incorporated all the touches I was going for. I had some leftover placemats so I used those at each setting to double as a name card and help fill the space on such a large table.
What’s a BBQ without all that good food? We have a smoker and my husband spends numerous hours on the weekends smoking all different kinds of meat. For this BBQ, I left it up to him on what he wanted to serve since it was his Father’s Day celebration. He put out a delicious smoked brisket, tri-tip and ribeye roast. We served up traditional BBQ food with potato salad, corn on the cob and watermelon slices. The kids dove into the hot dogs and chips!
For dessert I made my husband’s favorite cheesecake. Instead of making one large cheesecake, I made individual ones in the cutest little favor jars. I layered the graham cracker crust with the cheesecake and offered the cherry filling as a side. They were so cute and convenient in individual portions.
We spent the rest of the afternoon having a cornhole tournament and making s'mores with the kids while the dads finished off their beer flights. It was a great family fun-filled afternoon. Happy Father’s Day!
