BY JULIE VERVILLE | JANUARY 31, 2020

How can you create the perfect Mardi Gras party or event? There are so many colors to choose from. So, we’re breaking down 5 must-have items to include in your party for the perfect touch of Mardi Gras spirit. Keep reading for a bit of history, some simple décor ideas and stunning photo inspiration.

1. Mardi Gras Colors: Green, Gold & Purple

These 3 colors are said to have originated in 1892 with specific meanings: purple (justice), green (faith) and gold (power). These colors are in every Mardi Gras decoration around!

For our tablescape, we choose to focus primarily on the color gold, allowing purple and green to act as accents. The gold tablecloth acted as an anchor point for the centerpieces. We also chose gold plate charger, gold rimmed plates, gold accented silverware and gold character standees for an added touch.

Both purple and green were pulled into the Mardi Gras party in our mask centerpieces, bead accents and masks at each place setting.

2. Beads, Beads and More Beads

It's believed that beads were introduced in New Orleans during the late 1800s. Glass beads were tossed into the crowds, becoming an instant hit and now long-standing tradition of Mardi Gras. Today, they're among the most popular item to pass out during the season and are available in a variety of sizes and shapes.

In addition to handing them out during parades, beads also make great party decorations! There are a number of ways to incorporate beads into your Mardi Gras tablescape or party, including:

  •     Passing them to guests as they arrive
  •     Hanging them on chair backs for a seated dinner
  •     Filling a variety of clear glass vases and using them as simple centerpieces
  •     Draping them over decorative items and across the center of your tables

3. Incorporate Mardi Gras Masks

Masks are a very popular component to Mardi Gras celebrations. Mardi Gras masks are worn by party goers and float riders throughout the season. While some masks cover the entire face, others only cover the eyes.

We incorporated masks into our décor in a number of ways, including mask centerpieces, as imagery on multiple personalized items on the tables and for guests to wear. The variety of colors, prints and sizes made for a stunning tablescape that everyone enjoyed.

4. A Touch Of Carnival

Mardi Gras is certainly a season of parties, so incorporating the party spirit into your own event is a must-do. One of the most well-known phrases is the Cajun phrase, "Laissez les bons temps rouler", which in English means, "let the good times roll". We thought it would be fun to personalize coasters for each guest with the phrase to put at each place setting.

As guests entered, they were greeted by a colorful banner, reading "Beads & Bling It’s a Mardi Gras Thing" setting the stage for the fun expected ahead.

And, to send some of that party spirit home with guests, we chose personalized playing card cases as party favors.

5. Jazz Music

New Orleans, the home of Mardi Gras, is known as the birthplace of Jazz. While other types of music are played throughout the season, Jazz music is always played during parades and at Mardi Gras events. The gold, life-sized Jazz musician standees were a great touch to the party to add addtional touches of gold. Standees are an affordable way to add height and size to a party, filling up large spaces with ease.
