Top 3 tips to throw a green barbecue this summer

Date Created: 07/13/2011

Top 3 tips to throw a green barbecue this summer. Sustainability has become a huge trend throughout the country, and many individuals are taking a second look at how their actions are affecting the environment. To ensure that you are doing everything you can to reduce your carbon footprint, keep a few of these helpful tips in mind when you're planning your next summer barbecue.

1. Recycling bins. No matter what size of summer party you're throwing, these sorts of gatherings have the potential to produce a lot of waste. One way you can do your part to reduce your waste is by putting out various recycling and waste containers. Clearly label each of these receptacles so your guests aren't placing things in the wrong one. A good rule of thumb is to have a recycling bin for plastic bottles, paper and cardboard, a trash can for regular trash, and a compost bin for any food waste. This way, you can dispose of each section of trash properly and remove plenty of waste from your local landfill.

2. Organic and local ingredients. One way that you can be more sustainable is by buying local ingredients and organic food. Go to a local farmer's market to buy some vegetables and go to your local butcher shop instead of the chain grocery store to pick up your burgers and steaks. You can also buy some foods that are in-season to avoid having to pay extra for ingredients that need to be shipped around the globe. By taking these steps, you can help out your local economy and do the right thing for the environment in the process.

3. Re-use your party supplies. After you've decked out your space with some mylar balloons, party tableware or a party centerpiece, there's no reason why you have to use these products just once. Encourage your guests to keep track of their plates so that they aren't disposing of something needlessly, and be sure to hold onto some of those chic party supplies so you can use them for future gatherings.

Going green isn't as big of a chore as it seems. By reusing many of your party supplies, buying local and encouraging your guests to properly dispose of their waste, you can have one of the best parties of the season without making a huge impact on your environment.
