Top 3 tips to make your Thanksgiving party more sustainable
Date Created: 11/07/2011
Sustainability is at the forefront of many American minds these days, and it can be tough to equate the overabundance of food that is present on a Thanksgiving dinner table with green practices. Fortunately, there are a number of quick and easy preparations you can make for the upcoming holiday to ensure that your home looks spectacular, cleanup is much less of a hassle and nothing goes to waste. Keep a few of these tips in mind to feel a lot better about your environmental impact this Thanksgiving.
1. Head to a farmer's market. After you've chosen a few party decorations, such as mylar balloons, personalized banners and streamers, it's time to start planning out your menu. One way to help reduce your carbon footprint and help out your local economy is by attending a farmer's market. This will allow you to get a whole range of fresh produce to incorporate into your meal, and your guests will surely taste the difference. Additionally, many of these markets are less expensive than buying your food in a grocery store, so it could help out your bottom line.
2. Save your scraps! While you will probably be giving out more than your fair share of Thanksgiving leftovers, what do you do with everything else? This could be a great opportunity to start a compost pile in your backyard. This will allow you to place all of the organic material into a separate receptacle that can be used later down the line as fertilizer. This is a great way to remove your excess trash from the local waste stream and start a new practice of sustainability in your household.
3. Plastic utensils. While you may be tempted to break out your fine china for Thanksgiving, the amount of water you'll need to clean them is a huge waste. Instead, opt for some party tableware, imprinted napkins and plastic cutlery. While this isn't exactly the most glamorous setup, these products can be recycled when the meal is over, and it will completely eliminate your carbon footprint. Best of all, there will be much less to do when the night is over, so you can relax with a cup of coffee and some pumpkin pie!
These Thanksgiving party supplies will ensure that your party goes off without a hitch and limits your impact on the environment.
