Top 3 tips to celebrate the Kentucky Derby with style

Date Created: 04/05/2012

Top 3 tips to celebrate the Kentucky Derby with style. The Kentucky Derby is one of the oldest traditions in professional horse racing and is the first of the three races where a horse can begin a path to win the coveted Triple Crown. This year will be the 138th running of the Derby and it will be held on Saturday, May 5th. If you're thinking of hosting a gathering for the big race, there are plenty of party decorations you can work with and planned activities that can make the experience engaging for your guests. Once your party invitations have been sent out, you can get to work creating the authentic Kentucky Derby party experience for your guests.

1. Mint juleps. According to the race's official website, Churchill Downs serves 120,000 mint juleps over a two-day period, making it the signature drink of the race. When your guests arrive at your home, you can present them with the delicious cocktail. The drink combines bourbon, mint sprigs, sugar and water into a delightfully sweet libation. While the exact recipe varies from bartender to bartender, it is typically made by muddling the mint and sugar on the bottom of a glass, adding a few ounces of bourbon, water and then mixing evenly.

2. The proper attire. The Kentucky Derby is a surprisingly formal occasion with men coming dressed in suits and ladies wearing their best formal wear and the most opulent hat they can find. Incorporate this twist into your bash and award prizes to the guest who makes the greatest commitment to your party theme.

3. Hold the event outdoors. In the beginning of May, the weather should be getting much warmer and you can hold the majority of your get-together outdoors. Start by ringing the outside of your deck or patio with string lights, tiki torches, streamers and curling ribbon to give your seating area a dose of festive color. Break out the grill and throw all of your favorites on the fire, such as burgers, hot dogs, chicken and ribs. Finally, your party won't be complete without authentic Kentucky Derby party tableware, which will put the finishing touch on your décor.

With spring party season in full swing, you have countless options to work with the in the coming months. This year, pay homage to one of the great traditions in American sports and show off your party planning abilities with a gathering that embraces the time-honored traditions of the Kentucky Derby.
