Top 3 tips for throwing the perfect end-of-summer luau party

Date Created: 08/17/2011

Top 3 tips for throwing the perfect end-of-summer luau party. Now that the dog days of summer are here, many people are slightly bummed about the cooler weather that's on the horizon. If you're looking to give the season a proper sendoff, a luau party could be the perfect way. Unlike some theme parties where you can bend the rules a bit, a luau is all about the decorations and giving your guests the feeling that they're in a tropical paradise.

1. Grass skirts and leis. When your guests enter your venue, be sure to give them a floral lei and a grass skirt to wear throughout the evening. This will help to put them into the island vibe and they will also double as excellent party favors for them to bring home. Another idea is to put your cocktail area near the front door so that your guests can enjoy a pina colada, punch or any of their favorite island drinks as soon as they enter.

2. Sand underneath your toes. This will take a bit of preparation and may require some cleanup, but laying down a tarp and spreading some sand in an area of your home could be an unforgettable decorative accent. Spread a tarp down in the main gathering space, and be sure that you can easily move the tarp out the door when the evening is over. Then go to the store and buy some coarse white sand that you can spread easily across the tarp. Place down another tarp leading outside so your guests don't track too much of the sand throughout your home. It may require a bit of extra effort, but it will be well worth it.

3. Delectable cuisine. A good idea for any theme party is to take foods that you guests know and love and give them a twist. Whip up a Hawaiian pizza with ham and pineapple or make a selection of Hawaiian sliders that use a few strips of bacon and some caramelized pineapple. Use some imprinted napkins and party tableware to add a burst of color and to make cleanup easier at the end of the night.

Summer is on its way out, but with a few luau party supplies and a bit of creativity, you can give the season the sendoff it deserves.
