Tips for throwing a successful retirement party
Date Created: 04/26/2012
Your parents worked most of their life to pay the bills. They put food on the table, a roof over your head and might have even shelled out some dough for your student loans and first car payments. The eight hour days they spent laboring were done for your benefit, and after they punch the clock for the last time, they deserve a noteworthy celebration.
Send out party invitations to the coworkers, friends and family who have watched or worked with your parents. This marks a new beginning, and you want those who mean the most to your parent to be there and share this experience.
This is a celebration, so hang up streamers and balloons and bust out the confetti when the retirees first walk through that door. Delve into the nostalgia with a photo stand in of your mom and dad's working days, or make a personalized scrapbook of touching moments and pictures that have marked your parents' lives.
There are many fun party games you can play, and if your mom and dad have a good sense of humor, don't be afraid to play the over-the-hill jokes, these can be made in the form of personalized party supplies, whether it's comical napkins, hats or even a whoopie cushion. Stretcher.com suggests giving each guest a marble and then over the course of the night everyone puts the marble in a glass jar - this symbolizes all the marbles the retiree has lost over the years.
For gifts, give your mother and father something that is pertinent to their hobbies. Now that they have time, they will undoubtedly be diving into their favorite activities - whether it's reading mystery novels, gardening or playing an instrument. If you can, instead of each guest getting the retirees something, pool everyone's resources and put it toward a prepaid get-away to some place warm, relaxing or exciting. There is no better way for them to start their permanent vacation than with an actual vacation!
End the night with a toast. Talk about how much your parents mean to you and how grateful you are for what they have done. Infuse your speech with humor and sincerity. Encourage other people to speak as well, and recount tales of the past times they have shared in and outside the workplace.
