The magic of Paris in your backyard

Date Created: 05/07/2012

The magic of Paris in your backyard Paris - some people call it the city of the lights, while others do not need to describe it, because the city can speak for itself. Even if you have never visited, the mystique of Paris is likely forever planted in your mind through the multitude of pictures, art and movies that depict it. An example of this is last year's "Midnight in Paris," directed by Woody Allen, which paid tribute to great artists that had some connection to the city, such as F. Scott Fitzgerald, Ernest Hemingway, Pablo Picasso, Gertrude Stein and Cole Porter.

Show your own passion for Paris with a theme party that revolves around the semi-mystical metropolis.

Oui, you are invited
Send out party invitations fashioned from corrugated paper that are cut into the shape of the Eiffel tower. Announce to your friends that they should dress up in their fanciest and most suave garb for a night of culture and magic. Wear a fancy dress with an elegant hat or a freshly pressed suit. The key to dressing like a Parisian is to look sophisticated, but not give off the impression that you went to great lengths to do so.

Lights, camera, action!
Turn off your traditional lamps and string up glowing effervescent lights around your house - this will help diminish any feeling of domesticity, and play on the "City of Lights" theme.

The French are also famous for their cutting edge cinema that inspires many modern day directors like Quentin Tarantino. The style of film that was the most prominent was called French New Wave. Rent or buy a New Wave flick by one of the big name directors like Jean-Luc Godard or Francois Truffaut and play it on your television or project it onto your wall. This may inspire questions from your guests and you can then facilitate a discussion.

Other theme party supplies can include streamers and a fun Paris-themed photo stand in that will make your guests look as though they are posing in front of the Eiffel tower or are going for a stroll on one of the city's timeless and artsy avenues.

Serve wine in nice glasses and if you can, find someone with an espresso machine. Serve hors devours on glass platters, and do not forget to have fun and laugh, because if there is one thing Parisians know best, it's how to enjoy life.
