Slim down Fat Tuesday Mardi Gras is a holiday that has a reputation not only for extravagant times, but great indulgence. As the historically decadent festivities approach, consider celebrating the occasion by making it a health and fitness theme party that contradicts its name, and will leave you feeling fit and fantastic.

Gear up
Send out party invitations to your neighbors and nearby relatives, telling them to show up at your place dressed in something they can exercise in. Warn them that this bash will be alcohol-free, so leave the Mardi Gras margarita mix at home. It is still a party after all, so before the guests come, set the festive mood with balloons and streamers and party favors.

Food
Put a vegetarian spin on your day by cooking up some plant-based cuisine. Instead of fattening meats, make salads that use beans and nuts for protein. Also, consider cooking with soy and wheat-based products, like tempeh, seitan and tofu. Make sure you have plenty of party tableware so everyone can eat and enjoy the meal together.

For drinks, try to encourage no-sugar added fruit juices. Either make your own with a blender or purchase them at your local super market. Everyone will enjoy freshly squeezed orange juice or the sweet taste of grape juice. Highly discourage soda - the sugars, caffeine and high fructose corn syrup are only detrimental to you. Expand everyone's palates with alternatives to cow milk produced from soy, hemp or almonds. Green tea is also a good idea - it is rich in antioxidants, which is something the National Cancer Institute believes can help prevent cancer!

Exercise Time
Getting in shape doesn't have to be restricted to gymnasiums and treadmills. Get active and have fun with your guests with some party games. Backyard sports like wiffle ball, kick ball or volleyball will have everyone participating and working up a sweat. If you have a pool, encourage everyone to swim and play.

Make a promise
Fat Tuesday is well past New Years, and by this time those resolutions may have lost their luster or been forgotten altogether - remedy this by making some springtime promises. Give everyone a piece of paper and have them write down one way in which they will improve their physical well-being, whether it is to walk once a day or join a gym. Hopefully these new resolutions will stick.
