Sculpt a good time with a pottery party
Date Created: 04/30/2012
A pottery party will allow you and your friends to tap into your artistic side while creating a lively social environment.
Send out party invitations announcing your intention to have an evening of gossip, wine and crafts. Make sure everyone knows that previous artistic credentials are not necessary and the focus of the night is fun and self discovery.
The first step is to get all of your party supplies, which means the clay, molders, modeling utensils as well as the glaze paint. If someone has a pottery wheel and can instruct, it will be a great learning experience for everyone.
The key to making a craft-oriented party a success is to combine a festive atmosphere with a working one. Hang up streamers and balloons along the perimeter of the room and play some light-hearted music, perhaps some classic tunes that everyone will know the words to and be able to sing along with.
In order to make cleaning up the mess easy, you should take a few preventative measures. Cover your table with colorful corrugated paper and then put newspapers on the floor to collect all the excess clay and paint that may fall. Remind your guests that even though it is a party, dressing up is not required, and that old clothes that they do not mind getting ruined are the suggested evening wear.
After everyone has completed their creations, take a break and bring out the food. The working environment will already be messy, so your party tableware should be plastic and disposable utensils and bowls that can be recycled after. Cook up some tasty cookies or assorted pastries, serve some fine wine and let everyone kick back and relax in their smocks as they sip on chardonnay.
After the edible intermission, clear off the table and resume sculpting and painting. Once everyone is finished, the new creations need to be brought to a kiln. Usually a community art space will have one, and if you call beforehand they will likely be happy to let you use it. Recruit a friend that has a minivan or a car with a lot of space to help transport these works of art.
Once they are finished, you will have a great excuse to throw another party and have everyone back over to collect their beautiful vessels!
