Potluck party

Date Created: 04/17/2012

Potluck party Potlucks are the ideal way to eat, drink and be merry while encouraging community and having a delicious and diverse meal. Although you can always throw a no frills dinner in which everyone just brings a dish, don't hesitate to go over the top and turn your feast into a proper fiesta.

Consider it
When planning on who will bring what, it is best to coordinate with your guests to make sure no one is left out. Make sure there are options for people with dietary restrictions, like vegetarians and those with food allergies. Create labels on corrugated paper that indicate what the dish is, some key ingredients and the skilled chef who made it. Pre-planning the meal will be easiest if you send out party invitations that ask guests to RSVP with what they intend on preparing for the occasion. Also, if seating is going to be an issue, ask the prospective potluck attendees to bring their own seats.

Go all out
Celebrate the rare opportunity for people coming together with a festive environment and various decorations. Although everyone will bring their food in different dishes, matching party tableware will give your table a uniform touch. Adorn the perimeter of the table with curling ribbon and hang streamers of the same color scheme on the doorways and walls.
Your guests might not know each other, so plan a fun game to get everyone acquainted. Use a stylish bowl as a party centerpiece and fill it with with pieces of flat paper that have an interesting bit of trivia about your guests written on them. Each person will take out a piece of paper and try to guess who the fact is about.

Courses
Potlucks do not have to be just one course, they can be broken up into an appetizer, entree and dessert, or you can add one or two more courses to make sure everyone gets their fill. Food and Wine suggests assigning what guests will bring so there is the proper balance of each round. There is no greater travesty than running out of dessert.

Time to go
Chances are there will be a plethora of leftovers after everyone has gotten their fill. Have a bunch of disposable containers in which your guests can bring the remaining food home in, or be green and tell everyone to bring their own tupperware container.
