Have a fitness fiesta with your friends and family

Date Created: 05/18/2012

Have a fitness fiesta with your friends and family Health awareness is a trend that many Americans have taken an interest in due to growing awareness of all of the benefits that come from being active and engaging in daily exercises.

May is National Physical Fitness and Sports month. Get in the healthy spirit by throwing an exercise theme party that gets everyone off the couch and moving, while at the same time harbors a jovial social atmosphere that shows people that fitness can be fun. Send out party invitations to your neighbors and nearby family and friends that tells them to show up at your home dressed in gym garb and ready to go.

For activities, plan a series of games in the sunny spring weather that everyone can be involved in. These can be teamwork games such as volleyball, wiffleball or kick ball with scorekeeping and prizes. Create a competitive atmosphere by testing strength and stamina with tug-of-war matches and push up competitions. You can also recruit some of your friends who have specialized knowledge in fields like yoga and aerobics, to lead classes for the party goers.

As far as party themes go, wellness is one that does not require excessive decorating, so you can skip the usual streamers and balloons. What is more important are the food and the beverages. The meal should be rich with nutrients and centered around fruits and veggies, and other low-calorie and high vitamin foods. Make smoothies and other fun plant-based concoctions, using blenders and juicers.

Party centerpieces can be colorful dips like guacamole and organic salsa. For the main entree, make sweet potato sandwiches using cilantro spread and a spinach salad. For hors devours, forgo the usual greasy potato chips and instead offer up pita served with hummus or a black bean spread.

If you can, make your get-together educational, and hire a dietitian to come in and talk to everyone about healthy eating habits, or perhaps have a personal trainer visit and consult with individuals about their workout plans.

For party favors, send everyone home with pedometers so they can keep track of how many miles they walked or how far they have run. You can also make a great workout mix with inspirational songs and sports themes that people can listen to while they hit the gym and engage in their newfound healthy lifestyles.
