Give the gift of knowledge with a book drive bash

Date Created: 05/22/2012

Give the gift of knowledge with a book drive bash In our society, self-betterment is achievable through knowledge and education. Words and facts that make you wise are the steps to a better and brighter life. Learning is not something that should be restricted to any socio-economic class, rather it is and should be shared as an equal opportunity. According to, a recent study concluded that in middle-income communities, the number of age-appropriate books for each child is 13:1, while in low-income communities it is 1:300. Help change this inequality today with a book drive.

Send out party invitations to all of your friends telling them about the event. Fashion your invites out of corrugated paper and use yarn or twine as a binding to make them look like books. Ask all of your guests to dig into their closets and private collections and find all of the literature that they no longer use, or tell them to bring books they love but wish to share with an eager and budding reader.

Make your book drive a party with a festive atmosphere, using balloons and streamers. If you have any disheveled books that are in too poor of a condition to be donated, use the pages to make fun origami shapes and make them party centerpieces.

Besides being an occasion for selfless giving and donating, your party should also be a celebration of literature. Tell everyone to bring one of their favorite books - whether it is a childhood favorite or obscure foreign author - and let your guests get up and read a passage. This will help your literature-lover friends discover new writers and titles.

If any of your party-goers are writers themselves, let them read from their own works, or have an impromptu poetry slam. Give out party favors to those with the best written words with a gift certificate to your local bookstore or perhaps one of your own favorite pieces of fiction.

Make sure none of your guests go hungry or thirsty. Make some simple tasty and healthy snacks. Cut up an assortment of vegetables or put out a plate of pitas with hummus. If you want, you can turn the event into a potluck, by asking all of your guests to bring a dish.

End the night with a movie screening of a book adaptation. This could be a classic like The Grapes of Wrath by John Steinbeck, or a more recently released film such as Hunter S. Thompson's The Rum Diary.
