Get your guests into the action with a Do-It-Yourself party
Date Created: 05/29/2012
If you are looking to throw a party but want to avoid a drab affair where the guests merely sit around and placidly sip their beverages, then have a get-together that requires the party-goers to participate in a series of fun activities that will leave them satisfied and wanting more.
Invitations
In the spirit of homegrown production, make your own party invitations out of flat paper, stickers and perhaps a funny photograph of yourself glued inside the card. Tell your guests to wear clothes that they might not mind getting food or craft supplies spilled on. Let them know they should bring the little ones, because the fun is family friendly.
Pizza and ice cream
Get a bunch of personal pizza doughs and line up a series of sauces and toppings, that vary from traditional to completely out of the ordinary. You can have your guests bring their own mixins to share as well. Everyone will have to take turns using the oven, so accompany the pizza with a series of hors devours that range from chips to a veggie platter.
For dessert put out a variety of ice creams with as many toppings and sauces that you can think of. Include cones and fun party tableware that your guests can eat off of, and have stylish party centerpieces such as cookie tin favors to keep everything in.
For guests who abstain from dairy, you can provide alternate options such as Daiya cheese, which is lactose free, as well as ice cream made from hemp or coconut milk.
Get crafty
There are a series of creative ideas that your guests can indulge in after they get their fill of pizza and ice cream. If you want, let the children make their own necklaces, anklets and bracelets. All you have to do is buy an assortment of beads that vary in color, shape and size and accompany them with string. Having beads with letters imprinted on them will let the little ones personalize their creations, so they can spell their names or perhaps make one for mommy and daddy.
You can also do tye dyeing. Just alert your guests that they should bring a white shirt that fits them. Supply the tye dye materials and you will be able to see what great creations your party-goers produce from a plain t-shirt. Make sure they know that how they fold or tie the shirt before putting it in the dye will affect the pattern. If it is a nice day, do the tye dye outside, because there is a potential for a mess, especially with children.
