Game night

Date Created: 06/07/2012

Game night For decades the the board game has supplied not only fun but a great excuse for family and friends to congregate. Depending on what game you play, it can test reflexes, short term memory, trivia skills and even the ability to think ahead. These games that have lived on through the twentieth century and into the new millenium have become mainstays in the American household because they are engaging, yet they allow for players to socialize, and even become conversation pieces themselves. So throw a board game theme party for an evening of competitive fun.

Gather your friends
Pick a night when you and your friends will not have to wake up early for work or school the next day. Then issue party invitations online or in the mail. If you choose to make your invites by hand, use colorful flat paper and put printed images from board games like Trouble or Sorry on the covers and the insides.

Deciding on the game
It can be tough choosing what game you and your friends will play - everyone has a favorite. The most important part is to have a wide selection, so ask everyone to bring at least one game. If you can not come to a unanimous agreement, then cast a vote, and whatever game the majority of people choose, will be the game of the night. If you plan on making this a regular event, you can have a rotation of games, or each weekend someone else gets to choose.

A great way to complement your fun atmosphere is to add festive decorations. Hang up decorations like streamers, balloons and curling ribbon. You can make the colors match the game pieces, so if you play Sorry, have them be red, blue, green and yellow. You should also have lively background music playing to keep people upbeat and energized.

Eat, drink and be merry
Keep a constant supply of snack food around so people don't get hungry. You can purchase beverages for everyone or ask each guest to bring something to share. Due to the fact that you will be playing the game, you do not want to have to be getting up and constantly preparing or checking on the food, so if you do serve something homemade have it be ready before the night begins. Or you can have someone else do the work and order out.
