Fun in the sun, wild in the water

Date Created: 04/12/2012

Fun in the sun, wild in the water As the sun comes up earlier and stays out longer, we uncover our pools, don our swim trunks and take to the water. If you are one of the fortunate few who has a pool in their backyard, share the wealth and garner good karma by inviting your dearest friends and family to your place for a party.

Start things off with custom party invitations. Use your artistic skills to draw pool-themed graphics like flippers, goggles and diving boards on blue corrugated paper, and remember to ask guests to RSVP so you can plan accordingly.

Pool parties are one of the easier party themes to be creative with because once you have the water, everything else is up to you. Snorkels, sunscreen and waterproof disposable cameras make excellent party favors and will come in handy when your guests play party games like marco polo and blind man's bluff. You can also dress up the pool area with decorations like inflatable palm trees and mylar balloons.

When it comes to food it is wise to put out light snacks that won't result in unbecoming bloating or cramps, like fruit and crackers. As for drinks, fruity frozen cocktails will go well with the warm weather, but keep a cooler full of water so no one gets dehydrated in the heat.

If you don't want wet bathing suits and dripping guests walking through your house, set up a changing area outside with some tropical-themed party curtains.

Make sure you have accommodations for those on land. Chairs stationed around the pool are great for those who want to stay dry but not be left out, and they give mom and dad a place to rest and refuel while the kids continue to play. Umbrellas, canopies and shaded areas are also a nice retreat from the harsh rays of the sun.

Above all, safety should be your biggest concern. If your party goes into the night make sure you have adequate lighting and throughout the day there should be at least one designated grownup who hasn't been drinking to watch over the swimming area to make sure everyone is safe
