Fifties fiesta

Date Created: 04/18/2012

Fifties fiesta Throw a fifties theme party for a ride in a time machine, back to an era of rock 'n' roll, diners, twisting and shouting. A simpler time, when technology's greatest advancement was the antennae-clad television, and the only thing "text" referred to was words in a book.

Start out by sending party invitations made out of corrugated paper with pictures of the decade's most prominent personalities, like James Dean and Marilyn Monroe. If you are feeling crafty, cut out construction paper in the shape of little juke boxes or old cars that have fins on the back.

Greet guests at the door with cookie tin favors or some other container for them to put their cell phones in. Your party is time period-based and there is no room for current gadgets - this will force your guests to socialize instead of being pulled away by digital-age distractions.

Music is key to keeping your party true to the era. Play upbeat and catchy tunes from artists like Elvis, Buddy Holly and Bill Haley and His Comets, but end the night in true high school dance fashion with a slow number, such as "Oh Donna" by Ritchie Valens. If you still have a turntable, go analog and play old vinyl, and if you have a PA system, don't be afraid to take on the role of the deejay, with an eccentric on-air persona. Dance competitions are highly encouraged.

Have all your party goers to wear garb that their parents or grandparents might have worn - motorcycle jackets, poodle skirts, letterman vests and Chuck Taylor shoes. Give out awards for the most authentic costume.

For decorations, hang streamers with matching colored curling ribbon. Give your living room the feeling of being at a drive in by projecting a movie from the fifties on a blank space of wall. You can also have a photo stand in of past fifties icons as an extra attraction.

Leave out the standard party food with bowls of chips with salsa, a vegetable plate and assorted candy. Have a keg or a cooler full of beer and soda for beverages, as well as ingredients for mixed drinks, like whiskey sours and gin and tonics. Keep the blender going all night with different flavored milk shakes - whether you choose to add alcohol is up to you.
