A few helpful tips to throw a fabulous chili cook-off
Date Created: 01/12/2012
With the mercury dipping all around the country, now is the perfect time of year for comfort food. If you've been mulling over prospects for your next winter party, holding a chili cook-off could be a wonderful way to enjoy your favorite seasonal foods and let your guests show off their culinary prowess. However, holding a party this size that is centered primarily around food will require its fair share of preparations. Keep the following tips in mind to help your bash go off without a hitch.
1. Toppings. Even the most delectable chili will be sold short without the appropriate toppings to go on it, so make it your obligation to provide plenty of them for your guests. A selection of Mexican shredded cheeses like cheddar and Monterey Jack is a great starting point, so make sure you have plenty of it on your serving table. Green onions are another wonderful addition to a bowl of chili, so chop them up into tiny pieces so your guests can sprinkle some on top.
2. Catering supplies. With a wide selection of entries from your guests, you'll need a means of keeping everything warm. While you can keep many of the pots of chili on low-heat on your stove, consider renting a few compact butane burners. You should also have a good supply of party tableware, small bowls and plastic silverware near your serving table to let your guests serve themselves.
3. Party decorations. This is a chili cook-off, so your bash needs to reflect the festive nature of the occasion! Use some colorful gossamer paper to dress up a bare wall, then fill in the gaps with colorful streamers and mylar balloons. You can even sprinkle some confetti on your serving table to give the space a vibrant punch. Lastly, be sure to hand out small cards that will allow your guests to rate each chili - you can then give a small prize to the winner who will have this year's title of the best chili chef!
By utilizing these winter party supplies and making a few advanced preparations, your chili cook-off will be a fun and enjoyable time for you and your friends. Who knows, you may just gain a few new recipes out of the deal!
